A biochemist from the University of Navarra is researching liver alterations at the Mayo ClinicThe work by Jesús Bañales may contribute to the treatment of certain liver diseases The biochemist Jesús Bañales, a researcher from the Center for Applied
Medical Research (CIMA) of the University of Navarra, will work as a
visiting scientist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester (Minnesota, USA), in
order to broaden his studies on the mechanisms of bile secretion in the
liver.
In particular, during the two years of his stay he will focus on a
topic related to his doctoral dissertation, in which he analyzed the
mechanisms for releasing bicarbonate into the bile in response to the
hormone secretin. He has previously noted, during his work in the
Molecular Genetics Laboratory of the CIMA, that this excretion is
altered in certain patients with liver ailments. Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology
At the Mayo Clinic in the U.S., the biologist will study the cells of
the bile ducts in order to understand better the role that the AE2
protein plays in them. He expressed the hope “that the results will be
useful for the treatment of those patients with liver ailments who
present these alterations.” Dr. Bañales will collaborate
with Prof. Nicholas LaRusso of the Division of Gastroenterology and
Hepatology of the Mayo Clinic. This expert is the president of the
American Gastroenterological Association and is a former editor of the
journal Gastroenterology. School of Sciences
