Screening and treatment for cancer
Two main fields of research in the Oncology Division are lung cancer cancer, the aim is to find out how tumors develop from the very first moment until they become capable of invading other organs. In cooperation with the lung cancer program at the University Clinic of Navarra, researchers are working towards the development of new molecular tests to be used in early detection programs. Also, the hemato-oncology laboratories are exploring new treatments to correct genetic disorders in leukaemia and lymphoma and are working to produce vaccines against lymphoma, for use in clinical trials on patients. Other projects are focused on the isolation of stem cells from adult tissues, and their use in different debilitating and incurable illnesses.
Scientists are also working to improve diagnosis and predict the response to treatment in cases of prostate, breast and colon cancer. They are looking for new therapies which attack specific molecular targets to fight these tumors.
This division belongs to the EU research project on «Early Lung Cancer», within the international i-ELCAP project for the early detection of lung cancer.
Scientific research is carried out in cooperation with institutions of international renown such as the Cancer Research Centre of the University of Liverpool, the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Albert Michallon in Grenoble, the University of Minnesota Cancer Center in Minneapolis and the National Cancer Institute of the USA.
